Pierce Glynn has been in the vanguard of deploying the Human Rights Act imaginatively to strengthen traditional legal arguments in civil liberties and social welfare rights challenges.

For example: we have argued for the Article 8 right to respect for family life and home for squatters and homeless clients all the way to the European Court of Human Rights; we have successfully argued for the Article 3 right to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment for destitute asylum-seekers and for those in detention; we regularly rely on the Article 5 right to liberty for detainees and prisoners in cases up and including the Court of Appeal; we have used innovative arguments for the Article 4 right to freedom from forced labour for trafficked child migrants; we have extensive experience of Article 14 discrimination claims including numerous successful claims before the European Court of Human Rights; and we are experienced in claims concerning the state's investigative duties under Article 2.

By keeping up to the minute on the latest legal developments, Pierce Glynn is able to promote the use of international conventions in UK law for the benefit of our clients. For example, our recent casework includes challenges founded on the EU Reception Directive, the Trafficking Conventions, and the UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child and Disabled People.

We are also experienced in acting in claims against government where MI5 and MI6 are alleged to have been complicit in the torture and indefinite detention.

Our lead solicitor for human rights and international law is Sue Willman. In 2011, she completed an LLM in International Law at Georgetown University, Washington DC, where she conducted research for Human Rights First and Earthrights International.

Sue has returned to the UK to develop Pierce Glynn’s international work with a view to bringing civil damages claims against corporations in the UK courts. We also pro bono offer advice and assistance to NGOs and campaigning organisations interested in using international mechanisms to promote corporate accountability and human rights compliance.
