children rights Equality, discrimination & public sector cuts
Grey line

We have nationally recognised expertise in helping individuals and organisations challenge unlawful decisions to cut or reconfigure public sector services. This includes challenges where there has been inadequate consultation, breaches of equality legislation, and breaches of public sector procurement rules.

The solicitors in our team have acted in many high profile cases in this area including challenges to the previous government’s Post Office closure programme, London Councils’ voluntary sector grant cuts, the Skills Funding Agency’s cuts to further education fee remissions, cuts to local authority funded advice services, cuts to transport services, the closures of day centres, funding cuts relating to women’s refugees, the reconfiguration of services for people with learning disabilities, and cuts to social care provision.

We also act in equality and discrimination law cases which are unrelated to public sector cuts. In particular, we have considerable experience in acting in County Court claims against service providers and public bodies who have failed to make reasonable adjustments to their services or who have otherwise discriminated against particular service users. We have an excellent track record in recovering damages for unlawful discrimination in such cases, as well as securing changes to inaccessible buildings and adjustments to practices and policies which unfairly exclude protected groups.

We are also very experienced in using UK and European equality legislation to challenge unlawful decisions, policies and legislation both in judicial review proceedings in the UK courts and in the European Court of Human Rights.

Our lead solicitor for equality, discrimination & public sector cuts cases is Louise Whitfield.
