Environmental & planning law
 |
Pierce Glynn’s environmental and planning law work focuses on using domestic, EU and international law to challenge local authorities, central government departments and other public bodies whose acts and decisions threaten the environment. Most of this work involves acting for individuals, groups and organisations in judicial review claims. |

We are one of the few firms who specialise in environmental law and who are able to provide representation under the legal aid scheme. Where legal aid is not available but we think the case has merit we will usually agree to act at discounted hourly rates. We can also provide advice on securing protective costs orders to limit your exposure to adverse costs orders in unsuccessful cases.
We are members of the Environmental Law Foundation referral panel and will conduct initial work on a pro bono basis where cases are referred to us by the Foundation. Our solicitors who specialise in this area are also members of the UK Environmental Law Association, Friends of the Earth and the RSPB.
Our current or recent environmental and planning law work has included: advising on challenges to housing developments which exclude adequate provision for affordable housing; successfully overturning the grant of planning permission for a redevelopment project in Sussex; challenging Thames Water’s proposal to use a green space in Bermondsey as a construction site for the Thames Tunnel; providing representation at an inquiry relating to highway modifications within Epping Forest; advising residents campaigning against a retail development in north London; and providing advice on town and village green applications.
We also act for Gypsies, Travellers and Roma in relation to planning disputes; for example, we acted for travellers at Dale Farm in defending planning enforcement proceedings brought by Basildon Council.
Our lead solicitors for environmental and planning law cases are Gareth Mitchell and Sue Willman. Our lead solicitor for gypsy and travellers cases is Polly Glynn.
