To promote the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste materials from our offices so as to conserve resources and reduce waste disposal to landfill.
We have a contract with Paper Round, an office recycling company. We currently use them to collect paper and cardboard. We aim to send all our used paper to them (of whatever type). Confidential papers are shredded. At the end of cases, we re-use cardboard, lever arch, box, plastic files as much as possible. Plastic bottles, cans, bottles, and other non-office related paper and cardboard products are picked up weekly for recycling. Our ink cartridges are collected by McMillan Cancer Research.
Promote the reduction of excess paper waste.
Employees’ computers are currently defaulted to double-sided printing when possible. We also ensure that photocopying is double-sided when compiling bundles and other printed materials. Documents are scanned and saved and not copied or printed where possible eg briefs to counsel, LSC forms, instructions to experts. Documents for internal circulation are scanned and saved in the computer and/or emailed where possible.
Purchase consumables which are made from recycled materials or with a high recycled content, and/or can be recycled.
Purchase environmentally sound cleaning materials and avoid the unnecessary use of chemicals.
We do this by using hand soaps and toilet sprays that are non-detrimental to the environment and not using aerosol sprays. Loo roll and other such paper products are made from recycled paper.
Ensure that energy and water is used efficiently.
Staff are encouraged to completely shut down computers and printers at night. Staff are encouraged to turn off heating and/or air conditioners before they leave the office for extended periods of time. We also only use heating or air conditioners when natural heat is not sufficient. Lights and electrical equipment is turned off whenever employees leave their offices for longer periods. Lights in basement, bathrooms and other regularly unoccupied office spaces are kept switched off unless being used. All lights are switched off at the end of the day. Energy-efficient lightbulbs are purchased.
Staff are encouraged to cycle to work; safe storage for bikes and a shower are provided. Staff who do not cycle either travel by public transport or walk.
We support Fair Trade by only purchasing, in so far as practicable, Fair trade tea and coffee.
We endeavour to continuously improve our environmental performance by regularly reviewing our activities and setting new targets to reduce any environmental impacts caused by our activities.
We comply with all of the requirements of environmental legislation which relate to our activities.
